Prof. Manuel de Medeiros
Silva
Prof. M.
Medeiros Silva was born in Ponta Delgada (Azores) in 1943. In 1967 he obtained
the degree in electrical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon,
Portugal. In 1976 de obtained the Ph.D. degree from Imperial College, University
of London, and in 1983 the "Agregação" from the Technical University
of Lisbon.
He was a full
professor of Electronics at Instituto Superior Técnico (since 1986). He was
Chairman of the Deparment of Electrical and Computer Engineering during 1988 -
1990. He was Head of the Electronics Section during 1992-1995 and 2003-2004. He
retired from teaching in 2004, but continues his reseach activity at INESC-ID.
From 1977 to
1990, Prof. Silva was the head of the research group on "Microelectronics
Filters and Signal Processors" at CEAUTL, Lisbon. Since 1991 he is head of
the research group on "Analog and Mixed-Signal Circuits" at INESC-ID,
Lisbon, where he was chairman of the Scientific
Board from 1997 to 2003.
Prof. Silva
has supervised research and published technical papers on active filters, signal
processing, analog and mixed-signal electronic circuits, and power electronics.
He is the author of two textbooks (in portuguese), "Introduction to
Electric and Electronic Circuits" (1st. edition 1996, 2nd edition
2001) and "Circuits with Bipolar and MOS Transistors" (1st.
edition1999, 2nd edition 2003).
Prof. Silva was the founding chairman of the IEEE Portugal Section and has been the organizer of a number of seminars and conferences, including the 1st. Symposium on Electronics for Telecommunications and MELECON´89.
